JAL SHAKTI ABHIYAN

 SAVE WATER SAVE LIFE

Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a recently launched water conservation campaign undertaken by the Government of India with an aim to cover almost 256 districts across the entire country. This campaign comes under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Ministry of Jal Shakti was formed on May 2019 by merging of two Ministries. Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

This campaign has its focus on five important aspects water conservation and rain water harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development and intensive afforestation.

The campaign will run through citizen participation in two phases. Phase I from 1st July 2019 to 15th Sep 2019 for all states and UTs and the 2nd phase from 1st Oct to 30th Nov 2019 for states and UTs receiving the retreating monsoon (Andhrapadesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Puducherry).

It aims at making water conservation a Jan Andolan through asset creation and extensive communication. During the campaign officers, groundwater experts and scientists from the Government of India will work together with the state and districts officials. They will work in 1592 water stressed blocks in 256 districts. In these districts the ground water availability has reached critical and over exploited levels.

In urban areas, plans with time bound targets will be developed for wastewater reuse for industrial and agricultural purpose. There will be at least one urban water body for ground water recharge in the block or city.

Don't Waste Water

By this campaign the water reservoir in the rural areas will be renovated villagers will be trained to use rain water extensively.

For the long run, the government has launched the Jal Jeevan Mission with an aim to ensure piped water supply to all rural house-holds by 2024.

The Government of India has taken the water conservation as an important agenda. Central and state governments are working collaboratively. Jal Shakti Abhiyan cannot claim much success until excessive extraction of ground water is prevented. Every campaign will get success when citizens take part actively. We have to take part and spread awareness through word of mouth.
