This campaign has its focus on five important aspects water conservation and rain water harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development and intensive afforestation.

The campaign will run through citizen participation in two phases. Phase I from 1st July 2019 to 15th Sep 2019 for all states and UTs and the 2nd phase from 1st Oct to 30th Nov 2019 for states and UTs receiving the retreating monsoon (Andhrapadesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Puducherry).

It aims at making water conservation a Jan Andolan through asset creation and extensive communication. During the campaign officers, groundwater experts and scientists from the Government of India will work together with the state and districts officials. They will work in 1592 water stressed blocks in 256 districts. In these districts the ground water availability has reached critical and over exploited levels.

In urban areas, plans with time bound targets will be developed for wastewater reuse for industrial and agricultural purpose. There will be at least one urban water body for ground water recharge in the block or city.

For the long run, the government has launched the Jal Jeevan Mission with an aim to ensure piped water supply to all rural house-holds by 2024.

The Government of India has taken the water conservation as an important agenda. Central and state governments are working collaboratively. Jal Shakti Abhiyan cannot claim much success until excessive extraction of ground water is prevented. Every campaign will get success when citizens take part actively.
