SUEZ CANAL BLOCKAGE

CARGO SHIP STRANDED ACROSS THE SUEZ CANAL

MAKE GLOBAL TRAFFIC JAM

On 23rd March 2021 a cargo ship stranded across the Suez Canal. It has blocked the global shiping transportation.

Ever Given is the name of the stranded ship which is operated by Taiwanese transport company Evergreen Marine and is one of the world’s largest container carrier vessels. The length of the ship is 400m. and wide is 59m. It was carrying 20,000 containers and the total weight of the container is 2,24,000 tons.

The ship was going from China to Netherland. When it was passing through the Suez Canal a gust of wind diverted the ship towards the bank and stranded there. But the Suez Canal Authority told the reporters that the wind is not only the reason for stranding. There may be other reasons. They also informed that an investigation would be needed to determine whether technical or human error occurred.

SUEZ CANAL BLOCKAGE

As of Sunday (28th March) there were 369 ships stuck on the either sides of the blockage. About 12% of global trade around one million of barrels of oil and roughly 8% of liquefied natural gas of the total global transportation pass through the canal each day.

Before the pandemic passing ships through the Suez Canal contributed to 2 % of Egypt’s GDP. The SCA said that there are two ways of removing the blockage. One is excavating the under-water sand and the latter is unloading the containers to the other ships or to the bank which will help the giant ship in floating. Authority said that dredgers had so far shifted 27000 cubic meters of sand to a depth of 18 m. Along with the containers are also unloaded.

Finally the Giant ship freed on 29tth March with almost a week long continuous dredging, tugging operation and lastly with the help of high tide.
